How we assess importers

Our transparent framework helps you understand how we evaluate Japanese car importers. We assess each importer across five trust pillars, then provide an overall recommendation based on buyer needs.

The five trust pillars

Each importer is assessed across five key areas. Each pillar is rated as Strong, Average, or Limited based on our research.

Overall trust labels

Based on our pillar assessments, we assign each importer an overall trust label to help you quickly identify if they match your needs.

Well-suited for first-time buyers
Importers rated Strong or Average across most pillars, with particular strength in Communication, Guidance, and Pricing Transparency.
Better for experienced buyers
Importers with strengths in specific areas (like Inspection or Reputation) but less focus on hand-holding or detailed guidance.
Use with extra due diligence
Importers with Limited ratings in key areas or newer operations. May still be legitimate but require more buyer research and caution.

Our editorial policy

We are not affiliated with any importer. We do not charge importers for listings or assessments. Our trust assessments are based on publicly available information, buyer experiences where available, and our research into communication, pricing, and service quality.

We do not guarantee outcomes. Our assessments are editorial opinions, not endorsements. Importing a car involves inherent risks, and we cannot guarantee any importer will meet your specific needs or expectations.

Do your own due diligence. Always verify information independently. Check Companies House records, read reviews from multiple sources, ask for references, and ensure you understand all costs before committing. Our assessments are a starting point, not a substitute for your own research.

Assessments may change. As we gather more information or importers change their practices, we may update our assessments. If you notice significant changes with an importer, please let us know.

Due diligence checklist

Before committing to any importer, consider checking:

  • Companies House registration (if UK-based)
  • Online reviews and buyer experiences (multiple sources)
  • Clear written quote with all costs broken down
  • Shipping and delivery timeline expectations
  • Insurance options and what's covered
  • What happens if the vehicle arrives damaged or different than described
  • Payment terms and schedule
  • References from previous buyers (if available)
  • Import documentation and customs handling
